Don’t you wish you could just get rid of the fat? Well, you can. It is a myth that exercise can take away a fatty area on the body. Exercise can be an integral part of a general weight reduction program; however, exercise alone may not totally eliminate fat from specific areas. Sometimes, there are problem areas that simply will not go away.

Liposuction is more effective and direct. In one hour, Dr. Rabson can remove a fatty area which has bothered you for years. If you are spending a lot of effort exercising specific areas, liposuction can free up your time for healthier, overall exercising.

In the past, fat removal was done by direct excision, leaving large scars. Introduced to the U.S. by French surgeons in the early 1980s and originally called lipoplasty, liposuction involves sucking out fat directly through tiny openings in the skin. Dr. Rabson has been performing liposuction since 1983 and successfully performs it on all parts of the body, including the abdomen, thighs, hips, flanks and knees or anywhere there is excess fat.

Liposuction is probably the most popular cosmetic procedure, largely because it works. Generally, the recovery time is only a few days and Dr. Rabson can provide pain medication for discomfort, although not everyone needs it.

A question Dr. Rabson is always asked is, "How long will it last?" Within a normal weight range, liposuction is a permanent procedure. However, if a person gains excess weight, fatty deposits can build up throughout the body.

Although liposuction may reduce your weight or your clothing size, it is not really a weight reduction solution. If you are truly overweight, it is healthier and better for you to lose the weight first.

On the other hand, some people who have had liposuction find the added incentive to lose weight and start a good exercise regimen. This is certainly an acceptable approach to improving one’s health.

Liposuction can be performed in a comfortable office suite, usually with sedation, or for larger reductions, general anesthesia may be preferred. Except for the largest reductions, it is usually a walk-in-walk-out procedure.

Ultrasound can also be used to first break the fat cell membranes (using a process called cavitation) to allow the fat to be sucked out more easily. More recently, external ultrasound was introduced, which involves applying the sound energy from the outside of the skin.

The tumescent technique administers fluid-carrying anesthetic and medication into the fat layer, thereby significantly eliminating bleeding and easing the removal of fat.

For the abdomen, liposuction alone may not be the best procedure for some people. A tummy tuck, in conjunction with liposuction, will tighten the "stomach" muscles and provide a better overall result.
