Eyelid Lift

Eyelid correction is one of the easiest procedures for the patient to undergo and results can be quite dramatic. Performed under local anesthesia, excess skin is removed or tightened by excision, laser, or a solution (such as TCA).

Eyelid procedures can be performed in a couple of hours in a comfortable and private office suite. The next three days require some care, such as cool compresses, but there are no bandages and the patient can perform most activities in two or three days. There is usually mild swelling and discoloration, which can be covered with makeup or sunglasses. Most patients prefer to have surgery on Friday, so they can return to work on Monday or Tuesday.

There are no special age limits. Some young women show bulging of "fat" bags. Others develop dark circles, which may be shadows, underlying blood vessels, or actual darkening of the skin with either deep or superficial pigmentation. Early eyelid changes may be inherited. If it is a noticeable problem, there is no reason to wait.

Dr. Rabson performs either upper lids, lowers, or "all four". Rather than removing all the fat, he may choose to use some of it to fill in the grooves or hollows that can cause the dark shadow lines or circles. Sometimes, eyelid correction is just part of an overall facial rejuvenation, which may include a facelift, brow lift and frown line correction.

Cosmetic Surgery Fat can be removed through tiny openings. In the lower lid, a small opening can be made on the inside, first numbing the area with eye-drops. This is called the transconjunctival approach and, of course, leaves no visible scar. Stitches are not used. In fact, the opening heals so fast that when Dr. Rabson sees the patient three days later, it usually cannot be detected. Eyelid corrections typically last for years and some patients never need the procedure done again.

If you are considering some form of cosmetic enhancement, but are discouraged by the thought of having surgery, you should know that eyelid surgery is one of the least invasive of cosmetic procedures. The healing is rapid, like the healing of a scratch, and the result looks quite natural. As mentioned in our patient’s testimony, friends will not realize you had surgery because people do not study your excessive skin or the location of your fat deposits! However, you will lose that tired look and regain a brighter, healthier appearance.
