Skin Cancer Reconstruction

With more than a million new cases diagnosed each year, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. Fortunately, it is also the most curable. Treatment usually involves the removal of the cancer and often some of the surrounding cells. The scars that result from this life-saving surgery, sadly, are often disfiguring and can be especially damaging to an individual's self-image if the cancer was removed from a highly visible area such as the face. Using a variety of reconstructive techniques, Dr. Rabson is able to repair the damage left by skin cancer removal, restoring beauty and functionality to the treatment area.

Dr. Rabson is known in the Philadelphia and Montgomery County area for his expertise in skin cancer removal and reconstruction. He is very thorough and will spend time with the patient reviewing the various options for treatment. At times he may recommend the Moh’s technique which can involve stages of removal.  “Twilight sedation” supervised by a board certified anesthesiologist can be provided, to make the patient completely comfortable.

Dr. Rabson performs a microscopic excision and frozen section technique. An ongoing study of over 220 patients with basal cell carcinoma shows Dr. Rabson’s 5 year cure rate to be 99.5 percent. He very closely removes the tumor one layer at a time, so that the defect is as small as possible, and then chooses the type of repair that he feels would give the best appearance.

Dr. Rabson’s has a special interest in the treatment of malignant melanoma.   Because of his research in lymph node transplantation during his residency, he was one of the first surgeons in Pennsylvania to perform sentinel lymph node biopsies for melanoma.

The methods Dr. Rabson uses for skin cancer reconstruction depend entirely upon the patient's unique situation. Techniques that are commonly employed include scar revision, skin grafts, and flap surgery. Sclerotherapy for Spider Veins

Spider veins are a common cosmetic concern among women and some men. Also known as telangiectasias, spider veins are superficial blood vessels that have become dilated. Although spider veins most commonly occur on the legs, they can also appear on other areas of the body, including the face. The extent of their presence ranges from one or two threadlike veins to a large, interconnected patch.

Fortunately, spider veins can be treated with modern skin care therapy. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, 80 to 90 percent of spider veins can be improved significantly in appearance. Sclerotherapy is a time-tested treatment for spider veins on the legs. Using a very fine needle, Dr. Rabson injects a special fluid, called a sclerosing solution, into the affected blood vessels. By irritating the inner walls of the vessels, the sclerosing solution causes spider veins to close and grow fainter over the course of a few weeks.
