Power Assisted Liposuction Philadelphia

New Techniques Yield Better Results

Liposuction has become a rather common cosmetic procedure all over the world. Many patients have questions and concerns when it comes to choosing their specific type of liposuction. Dr. Joseph A. Rabson is pleased to offer personal consultations to our patients to discuss their options when considering liposuction. Dr. Rabson was one of the very first surgeons in the Montgomery County area to perform liposuction in 1983, and one of the first to offer power assisted liposuction when it was developed. Dr. Rabson and our team at Advanced Cosmetic Surgery and Laser Center are pleased to offer our expertise in such techniques as power assisted liposuction to the Philadelphia and Montgomery County areas.

What Is Power Assisted Liposuction?

With suction assisted liposuction, a slender, straw-like tool, called a cannula, is used to manually vacuum out the fat from the patient's body. As the liposuction procedure has grown in popularity, there have been changes and adaptations in liposuction techniques and practices. One of the latest and most popular advances in liposuction is the introduction of the power assisted liposuction procedure. This procedure uses a suction cannula that vibrates in a smooth manner, reducing the need for the surgeon to forcibly move the cannula back and forth.

What Are The Steps Involved in Power Assisted Liposuction?

The power assisted liposuction (PAL) procedure is similar to the ultrasound assisted liposuction (UAL) procedure. As with UAL, the first step of power assisted liposuction is the injection of a tumescent fluid (a mixture of anesthetic, saline, and epinephrine) into the area being treated. Ultrasound, however, may cause burns to the overlying skin, and Dr. Rabson avoids its use in most cases when it is not necessary. With PAL, the specialized cannula uses tiny, fast vibrations to break up the fat cells so they can be vacuumed out of the body. With PAL, the movement of the cannula is done mechanically, rather than manually by the doctor. Dr. Rabson, believes that PAL is more gentle, faster, and smoother, allowing him to deliver more favorable results to the patient. Dr. Rabson compares the motion to that of playing the violin compared with the more forceful older techniques.
