What We Look for In Facelift Patients

A variety of physical and mental factors are considered before we decide whether a patient is an ideal candidate for facelift procedures, including:

• Physical Health - Though many of our patients believe that age is the primary limiting factor when it comes to facelift surgery, in fact nearly any adult patient can undergo a facelift procedure assuming he or she is healthy. It is important to understand that facelift surgery is an invasive procedure; a person of good health will be better able to deal with the discomfort often experienced during the healing period. Patients must have stopped smoking, preferably for months or years before this procedure, as smoking greatly increases the risks of poor healing.
• Mental Health - An ideal facelift candidate is one who has realistic expectations of both the recovery process and the results of the procedure. It is important that patients realize a facelift procedure is designed to provide long-term benefits, not permanent ones, and that the initial recovery process may be difficult for some people.
• Skin Elasticity - As the facelift procedure involves pulling and tightening the skin and deeper tissues of the face, it is important that the patient have skin that has retained a certain level of elasticity and health.
• Excess Skin - Because facelift surgery requires the doctor to pull and tighten the skin to remove wrinkles and eliminate sagging, the patient must have excess skin that can serve as "slack"; this skin will be removed at the conclusion of the procedure.
• Bone Structure - A solid bone structure must exist to serve as a foundation for the facelift procedure, whether it is a standard facelift or another procedure such as a lower facelift. If the patient lacks solid bone structure or has elements of the jaw that may prevent the aesthetic goals from being met, implants may be necessary to achieve satisfactory results.
