Most complications arising from eyelid surgery are temporary, but permanent impairment can occur. The most severe risks include ectropion and hematoma, but these are rare.

• Ectropion - This means that the lower eyelid drops to a lower position, usually because too much skin was removed at the time of surgery. This rarely requires additional surgery to correct.
• Hematoma - This involves a buildup of blood beneath the skin.

Eyelid surgery risks can also include a number of less serious complications and side effects, such as:

• Milia - also known as the formation of whiteheads that appears after sutures are removed. These resolve easily.
• Swelling- This occurs in the corners of the eyelids. This can be treated by gently applying cold compresses.
• Difficulty keeping the eyes closed while sleeping - This is usually only a temporary problem.
• Blurred or double vision - This usually disappears on its own within a few days.
• Dryness or irritation of the eyes - This can be treated with artificial tear drops or ointment provided by the doctor and also is usually temporary. Patients with preexisting dry eye syndrome must be treated more conservatively.

Other potential complications may include infection, scarring, and excessive tearing. Sedation is sometimes recommended during the procedure and a patient may experience a slightly negative reaction to anesthesia, such as nausea or vomiting.
