Breast Augmentation Candidates

The most suitable candidates for breast augmentation are women at least 18 years of age who are in generally good physical and emotional health and have realistic expectations regarding the procedure. Women who are pregnant or nursing should postpone breast enlargement.

Because the decision to undergo breast augmentation is an important one, Dr. Rabson helps his patients understand both the benefits and the risks of the procedure. Your Breast Enlargement Consultation

Once you have decided that fuller breasts may help you achieve your desired look, your first step is to schedule a consultation. It can be exciting for a prospective breast augmentation patient to come to the office and see her potential results via video imaging or "sizer" breast implants that are placed inside the bra. The most advanced digital techniques can show how your body would look with varying degrees of breast augmentation. To dispel any embarrassment, Dr. Rabson and his staff have a strict code of privacy and confidentiality.

During your consultation, you will see many before-and-after photographs that our patients have graciously allowed us to show. We will also provide you with phone numbers of patients who have undergone the procedure and would be glad to speak with you.

The Breast Augmentation Procedure

To help you understand the breast enlargement procedure, we use brochures and video diagrams that show the basics of the surgery and the various ways the implant can be placed. Dr. Rabson can perform breast augmentation using periareolar and inframammary incisions, with either saline or silicone breast implants.

• Periareolar Incision: Made around the edge of the nipple where it meets the surrounding breast tissue, the periareolar incision is popular among breast augmentation patients because any resulting scars are camouflaged by the natural change in pigmentation.
• Inframammary Incision: Also called a crease or fold incision, an inframammary incision is placed in what is called the inframammary fold, the area beneath the breast where it meets the chest.

Dr. Rabson uses a technique that is as gentle as possible so that there is less post-operative discomfort.  Dr. Rabson usually places implants partly under the muscle for a softer, more natural look. 

You can choose either saline or silicone gel implants for your breast augmentation.  Silicone gel implants require a longer incision, and currently, regular MRI studies are recommended to follow how they are doing.  The chief advantage of silicone gel implants is that they feel somewhat more natural than saline. Saline implants require smaller incisions are currently more popular than silicone.  In Dr. Rabson’s experience, capsule formation or hardening occurs only rarely with saline implants.

Dr. Rabson and his experienced staff will be happy to discuss with you the advantages of each type of implant.

If there is sagging of the breasts, placing an implant alone can give the appearance of an uplift, but if the nipple is very low (below the crease), a surgical uplift or mastopexy will be required.  Depending on the degree of sagging and size of the implant, Dr. Rabson may occasionally recommend doing a mastopexy first, followed by the augmentation several weeks later.
