Silicone breast implants
There is quite a bit of talk lately about the safety and effectiveness of breast implants during breast augmentations. Some researchers argue that safety is being compromised with the addition of breast implants, and the debate was well documented in this article. However, long-term studies from the Food and Drug Administration demonstrate that silicone-gel implants are indeed safe, as long as patients understand that there can be complications, as with any surgery.
FDA Studies
The FDA has followed women with implants from the major manufacturers of the implants, including Allergen and Johnson and Johnson. From these studies, the FDA not only was able to conclude that silicone-gel breast implants are safe, but that the technology is improving to make the process less-invasive. From 2005 to 2011, swelling with breast augmentation surgeries has decreased from 23 percent in 2005 to 9 percent in 2011. Likewise, the instances of scarring has also decreased from 8 percent in 2005, to 4 percent in 2011.
These facts and statistics might seem overwhelming, but they offer insight into how medicine is advancing towards making surgeries that are less-invasive and ultimately safer.
